Lesson · Hydrometeorological Extremes & Flood Resilience

Learning objectives

  • Explain why moving water of modest depth can carry a person or a vehicle.
  • Set an observable departure trigger that does not depend on judgement under stress.
  • Evaluate a route for crossings that become impassable first.
  • Describe why returning for possessions is the most common fatal decision.

In the field

Ordered, and meant to be workable under pressure. Numbered because the sequence matters.

  1. Choose a fixed water mark near your home that means leave now, and tell everyone what it is.
  2. Walk your evacuation route and note every point where it crosses a channel or low ground.
  3. Move documents, medication, and a change of clothes into one grab bag kept high and by the door.
  4. Never drive or wade through moving water of unknown depth; turn around and use the alternate route.
  5. Once you have left, do not return until the responsible authority says the area is clear.

The tag under each source states what was actually checked. “Authority named · URL not re-resolved” means the issuing body and document are named, but the link was not re-resolved for this lesson. It is not a claim of verification, and the authority’s own current bulletin always supersedes anything here.
