How to read a building for the configurations that concentrate earthquake damage — soft storeys, unreinforced masonry, short columns — and what a non-engineer can and cannot conclude from a walk-around.

In the field

- Walk the ground floor and note whether it has markedly fewer walls than the floors above.
- Check whether infill walls stop partway up columns, leaving a short exposed segment.
- Photograph and date any diagonal cracking at wall and column joints for comparison over time.
- Record which exits remain usable if the ground floor deforms, and mark an alternative.
- Refer anything you find to a licensed structural engineer rather than acting on your own reading.
